One of the first questions I hear from new parents after booking a newborn session is: “What are we supposed to wear?”

And I completely understand. You just had a baby, you’re running on very little sleep, and somehow you’re expected to coordinate an entire family’s wardrobe for photographs that will live on your walls for years. No pressure, right?

The good news? Choosing what to wear for your newborn photography session doesn’t have to be complicated.

My goal is to create newborn photographs that feel soft, timeless, natural, and full of connection, so I recommend choosing clothing that complements your family rather than distracting from the moments we’re there to capture.

Here are my favorite tips for creating a beautifully cohesive look as a Dallas newborn photogrpaher.

Start With Mom

If there is one person I recommend choosing an outfit for first, it’s mom.

You just brought a whole human into the world. You deserve to feel beautiful.

For newborn sessions, I love soft, feminine pieces that photograph beautifully—flowy dresses, elevated knitwear, neutral tones, soft textures, and silhouettes that move naturally. A beautiful dress can also make you feel a little more put together during a season when you may not feel quite like yourself yet. If it's colder and you want a more relaxed and casual vibe, a neutral chunky sweater and jeans.

Think cream, ivory, beige, taupe, soft brown, muted blush, or other understated tones that complement your home and the overall feel of your images.

And if you're nursing, consider that when choosing your outfit. Comfort and functionality matter just as much as how beautiful something looks.

Keep Dad's Outfit Simple

For dads, simple almost always wins.

A neutral button-down, linen shirt, sweater, or well-fitting t-shirt paired with chinos or neutral pants can create a timeless look without feeling overly formal.

Avoid large logos, bold graphics, and very bright colors. Instead, choose pieces that coordinate with mom without matching her exactly.

The goal isn't for everyone to look identical. You want everyone to look like themselves—just beautifully coordinated.

Dress Your Little Ones in Soft, Neutral Layers

Newborns don't need much!

For baby, simple is often best. A classic neutral swaddle, a simple onesie, or even just a diaper can create some of the sweetest images because there is nothing competing with those tiny fingers, toes, cheeks, and baby rolls.

For siblings, think comfortable and classic. Soft dresses, knit sweaters, neutral tops, overalls, or simple separates are all beautiful choices.

And don't worry if your toddler refuses to wear the outfit you picked.

As a mom of two little ones myself, I can confidently tell you that toddlers did not receive the memo about our carefully curated wardrobe plans.

That's okay.

We'll work with their personalities and let them be themselves. Read more about about preparing your small children for an in home newborn photography session here.

Choose Neutrals and Soft, Earthy Colors

For a timeless newborn gallery, I generally recommend a neutral and understated color palette.

Some of my favorites include:

Ivory and cream

Beige and tan

Soft white

Taupe

Warm brown

Soft gray

Muted blush

Dusty blue

Olive or muted green

These colors photograph beautifully in natural light and allow the focus to remain on your family and your connection.

You don't have to dress everyone in white or beige. In fact, adding subtle variation in color and texture can make your photographs feel much more natural and layered.

Think About Texture

Texture is one of my favorite ways to add visual interest without introducing distracting patterns.

Think:

Linen. Knits. Cotton. Gauze. Lace. Waffle textures. Soft sweaters.

These materials photograph beautifully and add depth to an image while maintaining that soft, timeless feel.

Textures are especially beautiful in close-up photographs of parents holding their newborn or snuggling together as a family.

Skip the Matching Outfits

Matching family outfits can sometimes make photographs feel more coordinated than connected.

Instead of everyone wearing the exact same color or pattern, choose a color palette and build from there.

For example:

Mom: cream floral dress

Dad: baby blue or beige linen shirt + khaki pants

Baby: ivory onesie/set

Sibling: soft taupe dress or white shirt with khaki shorts

Everything works together without looking like everyone went shopping for the same outfit.

Ready to Plan Your Newborn Session?

Your baby's first days pass in a blur. Before you know it, those tiny fingers will be grabbing everything, those newborn stretches will become crawling, and you'll wonder how they ever fit so perfectly in your arms.

Your newborn session is about more than getting a beautiful photo of your baby. It's about documenting your family as you are right now—the newness, the connection, the tiny details, and all the love that somehow grows even bigger the moment you bring your baby home.

If you're expecting, I would love to help you plan a newborn experience that feels relaxed, personal, and beautifully yours.
