There is something incredibly special about documenting your baby in the place where your family is beginning this new chapter—your home.

An in-home lifestyle newborn session is relaxed, natural, and centered around connection. Rather than driving to a photography studio in DFW, we focus on the little moments that naturally happen at home: snuggling in your bed, rocking your baby in their nursery, tiny fingers wrapped around yours, siblings meeting their new baby, and all the beautiful in-between moments of those early days.

If you're preparing for your in-home newborn session, here are a few simple ways to make the experience as relaxed and enjoyable as possible.

Let the Natural Light In

Natural light is one of my favorite parts of an in-home lifestyle session.

Before I arrive, open your curtains and blinds and let as much natural light into your home as possible. If the weather allows, turn off overhead lights and lamps so we can work primarily with the beautiful window light coming into your space. Don't worry if your home isn't filled with enormous windows. I'll work with the light we have and find the spaces that photograph beautifully.

Choose a Few Meaningful Spaces.  You don't need to photograph every room in your house. I typically love focusing on a few spaces where your family naturally spends time.

Think:

Your bedroom

Baby's nursery

The living room

A cozy reading corner

The kitchen

A favorite chair or sofa

Keep Baby Comfortable

Temperature:

Newborns are still learning to regulate their temperatures when they are still in that early 1-2 week range, so I tell parents to make sure their home is not to cold during the session.  Just dial the thermostat a few degrees more than normal and turn off any fans in the rooms we will be in while changing outfits.

As a DFW photographer, I totally get that we can't compete with the Texas heat in summer and I don't want everyone to be hot and uncomfortable - so I also come prepared with a mini heater, that way baby can get direct warmth in between outfit changes and swaddling.  The warmth tends to keep baby at ease and less likely to fully wake when we want those sleepy poses.

If baby wakes up, this is still ok! We just want to ensure that baby is still comfortable.  I am always prepared to help settle baby with "shhh-ing" and plenty of pats during these transitions.

Pre-Session Bottle/Nursing:

I like to advise parents to have baby fed right before I arrive, that way baby is already full and happy and we are already of to a great start!  However, I do allow ample time in our session for feeding and diaper change breaks as needed.  It is to be expected!

Preparing Siblings for the Session

Adding a new baby to your family is a huge transition—and if you already have a toddler or older children, you may be wondering:

"What if my toddler won't cooperate for the newborn photos?"

Your newborn session isn't about getting your children to sit perfectly, smile on command, or pose exactly the way you imagined. Especially during an in-home lifestyle newborn session, I want to capture your children as they really are and document the beginning of their relationship with their new sibling.

Talk About the Session Ahead of Time

A few days before your session, casually talk to your children about what will happen.

Keep it simple and positive. You can tell them that a photographer is coming to your house to take pictures of your family and their new baby. Let them know we'll be playing games, cuddling, reading books, and taking pictures together with the baby.

Try not to make it sound like a big performance they need to prepare for.

The goal is for the session to feel like something fun you're doing together—not something they have to "get right."

Ready to document those tiny toes, sleepy snuggles, and all the little details you’ll wish you could freeze in time? I’d love to help make your newborn session feel relaxed, beautiful, and completely stress-free—even if your baby has other plans! As a DFW newborn photographer, I’ll gently guide you through the experience while capturing the genuine connection and fleeting moments that make this season so special. If you’re expecting, I’d love to hear from you and start planning your newborn session.
